Back yard projects and some homework done

Hi Friends.
Happy Sunday.
I hope that you all had a great weekend.
It was a nice few days here...   We got some chores done, spent time with Paul's mom in PA, and hung outside with our girls and the pups.   This strange weather still hasn't allowed us to get out on the water yet.     It's supposed to rain again today so I'm not planning to do much besides make a batch of homemade spaghetti sauce in the slow cooker.

Our refrigerator needs a good cleaning and organizing,  Maybe I'll do that also.

A few weeks ago I tackled a project that I had been thinking about doing for some time.

It didn't seem to bother me before,  but as the time changed...  so have the neighbors,  and now the houses seem so much closer than they did many years ago.

Since their kitchen window faces our deck,  I often feel like I am on display for the next door neighbor and it makes me a little uncomfortable.

I decided that I wanted to create some sort of privacy on that side of the deck and started drawing out some ideas.
-  While I would have liked to be more elaborate with the design ..  I didn't want to spend a ton of money on the project.   And,  I wanted instant gratification.

paul was probably freaking out when I started cutting pieces off of the deck railing...
but I had a plan that included  2 6ft 4x4s,  2 garden trellises and a few brackets.

Once I got the 4x4's in place, paul helped me level and secure them.
I prepainted 2 garden trellises and cut the legs off of them before attaching one to each side of the posts.

I left enough space so that I could slide a planter under the trellis and then planted some red bean climbers that will hopefully take over the trellis and offer even more privacy.
Supposedly the red bean flower attracts humming birds..
I'm excited to find out.

I am very happy with the results..   now,  I don't feel so awkward when I sit out there enjoying my coffee while still in my pajama's.

Remember that homework that I gave myself...

Well,  I've been working on it.
This is what we did this weekend.

I have always wanted a canopy of lights in the back yard and the normal ( stressed out about moving, me) would have put off hanging the lights until our next house.
The me that is trying to enjoy the right now said..  lets just do it and enjoy the back yard while we're here.   I'm so glad that we hung them,  We've sat out there the last few evenings... and it's quite magical.

I snapped a picture of the little garden flag that michelle gave me for Christmas..

It really does look like my little spoiled princess.

Hope that you all have a great new week ahead.
Stay safe and dry!

  1. The trellis garden box was an excellent idea! Not only does it gives you privacy, but it also added extra beauty to the deck. I have planted Hyacinth beans to grow up a windmill in my garden. I have planted them assorted places in our garden for a few years now. They are always so pretty and fill in fast. This is the first time I have planted them by the windmill.

  2. You are amazing!
Not only did you think of that awesome idea, you implemented it as well!
    It looks wonderful.
And I read your last post.
    I loved it.
That is something I work on daily.
    Hugs!!!

  3. I love your back deck, and the trellis is a great idea. I had to laugh when I saw the chunk cut out and your comment about your husband possibly freaking out. I'm sure it's an adventure, living with you! I admire the way you don't hesitate to figure out a solution and fix things.
